Something for everyone
Our expansive facilities support a range of sports. Our students have access to football and rugby fields, an international-standard hockey turf, tennis and netball courts, an aerobics room, a sports hall and a full gymnasium.
Athletics
The Primary School Athletics day is held in Term 4, followed by the interschool competition for a selected team.
Cross country
All Primary School pupils take part in the cross country, held at ACG Strathallan in Term 3. Qualifiers then go on to compete at the interschool competition.
Hockey
Year 1 – 6 students play in combined Strathallan-Waiau Pa teams in the Counties Club competition. These games are held on Friday nights or Saturday mornings, depending on grade. Training for these teams is held on the school turf.
Karate (style goju ryu)
There are several karate classes at ACG Strathallan for both students and adults. Come and give a class a try before signing up. Sensei Penny Cheketri, Renshi (senior instructor) is a 5th Dan, Black belt instructor who is a teacher at Strathallan. She is an internationally qualified karate instructor.
Netball
Strathallan girls’ netball in Years 5 and 6 play at the Papakura Netball Centre on Saturdays from March – August. Registration and trials are held early in February.
Swimming
The primary school swimming sports are held in Term 1 at Massey Park, Papakura. Qualifiers compete at the interschool competition.
Year 4-6 primary school students are able to join school teams and take part in annual Jump Jam Aerobics competitions.
Lunchtime sports
Each week there is organised sport on offer ranging from Football through to Badminton. Often these will be run through a House League where students are selected to compete for their Houses. These events are always strongly supported by side-line cheering and high levels of participation.
Senior Sports League
Each term Year Five and Six students compete in house teams as part of a Senior Sports League. The league comprises of pool play stages, followed by semi-finals and finals. All senior students take part in the weekly games and each team is led by a Year Six House Captain. Sports featured include Football, Olympic Handball, Netball, Touch Rugby, Rounders, Cricket and Softball.
Interschool sports days
ACG Strathallan plays a highly active role in the North Counties Schools Sports Tournament Days with teams participating in tournaments across several sporting codes. These include Cricket, Touch, Rippa Rugby, Netball, Turbo Touch, Football, Ki-O-Rahi, and Softball among others.
Gymnastics
All primary students receive instruction within Gymnastics. There is an opportunity for selected students to represent the school in local and regional competitions.
Athletics
The college athletics day is held in February and includes both traditional and fun events. Based on results, a team is selected to compete at the Counties and Greater Auckland Secondary events later in Term 1.
Year 7 and 8 students who qualify will then compete at the North Counties events and if selected the Counties and Greater Auckland events in Term 4.
A weekly competition for Years 9 to 13 is played in Terms 2 and 3 at the Ray Phillips Badminton Centre in Papakura. Teams are selected in Term 1. Training is on Thursdays after school in the college gymnasium.
Students in Year 7 and 8 have the opportunity to play in a North Counties one-day tournament in Term 3.
Basketball
ACG Strathallan teams for Years 9 to 13 currently play in a Franklin Basketball League, in Pukekohe on a Thursday evening. Trials are held in Term 1. Training is held after school in the college gymnasium.
Students in Year 7 and 8 may have the opportunity to play in a Franklin Basketball League in Term 4.
Cricket
Students wishing to play Saturday cricket are encouraged to register with the Karaka Cricket Club. During Term 1 there is the opportunity for Years 9 to 13 students to play in the Gillette Cup Team. Girls can enter the Years 9 to 11 NZCT Cup.
Year 7 and 8 players are offered the opportunity to play in the NZCT Cup, and in a North Counties Summer Fun Field Day, both held during Term 1.
Cross country
The college cross country is run early in term 2. The top Years 9 to 13 students are then offered entry to the Counties and Auckland Secondary Schools events.
Top qualifiers from Year 7 and 8 go on to race at the North Counties, Counties and Auckland events in Term 3.
Cycling
Our cyclists race in the Auckland Secondary Schools Team Trial Series from May – September. There are seven race days in total over the season, with racing held on Sunday mornings. Our cyclists also compete at the North Island Secondary Schools Championships, the New Zealand Secondary Schools Individual Championships and the New Zealand Road Cycling Championships. *Check availability with the school.
Equestrian
Our Year 9 to 13 riders compete in all major equestrian events during the year.
Year 7 and 8 riders compete at a Ribbon Day during Term 1.
All riders are requested to fill in an equestrian registration form, which provides us with full details of qualifications and experience to assist us in selecting teams.
Our Equestrian coach is Annie Styles.
Football is played in the Counties Manukau League organised by ASB College Sport. Games are played on Wednesdays at 4pm, home and away from May – August. We currently have senior and junior teams in both the girls’ and boys’ competitions. Our 1st XI teams also compete at the National Secondary Schools Winter Tournament week. Trials are held early in Term 1.
Golf (Year 9-13)
All players must be current members of a New Zealand affiliated golf club and hold a handicap index. Numbers permitting, we enter a team in the premier 9-hole competition, held on Mondays during February and March. *Check availability with the school.
Gym sports
We have a small group of Year 7 to 13 gymnasts competing at Auckland and National Secondary School level. Our Trampoline team is coached by one of our ex-senior students. Training is held in the college gymnasium.

The hockey season runs from May – September. Our teams compete in the Counties Secondary Schools competition. Qualifiers go on to play in the Intercity competition. Our 1st XI teams compete at the National Secondary Schools Winter Tournament week.

Team Tag Triathlon, Aquathon, Duathlon and Triathlon events are held in Term 1. The New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Triathlon Championships are held in March and the NZSS Duathlon championships are in August.
Year 7 and 8 students also have the opportunity to compete at the Franklin Primary Schools Triathlon held at Clarks Beach, also in Term 1.
Netball
Netball for players in Year 7-13, is played at the Papakura Netball Centre on Saturdays from March – August. Registration and trials are held early in February. Our Collegiate Navy team have the opportunity to play in the College Sport Counties Manukau competition played on Wednesday evenings, as well as attend the Upper North Island Winter Tournament competition.
Year 7 and 8 players also have the opportunity to play in the local Primary Schools tournament as well as the North Counties Winter Field day.
Orienteering is held in Term 1 on Mondays after school. It is hosted by a different Counties Manukau participating school (including Strathallan) each week, with the semi-finals and finals being held at the end of Term 1. In Term 2, entries are encouraged in the Auckland and North Island Individual Orienteering Champs. A muster will be held early in Term 1.
Rowing
ACG Strathallan students row with the Counties Manukau Rowing Club at Mercer. The school regatta season runs during February and March, culminating with the Maadi Cup. Weekly trainings are held during winter and Counties Manukau Rowing Club recruits rowers during September and October for the upcoming season.
Rugby (Year 9 – 13) *numbers permitting
Strathallan competes in the Counties Manukau schools competition played on Saturdays.
Skiing
ACG Strathallan competes at the North Island Secondary Schools Skiing competition, held at Mt Ruapehu in September. A muster is held late in Term 1. Training starts early in Term 2 and is held at Snow Planet. After the team selection is made, a training camp is held at Whakapapa during the July school holidays. *Check availability with the school.
Swimming
The college swimming sports are held in February at the Manurewa Aquatic Centre, with the Champions competing at the Counties Manukau zone event. Success at this event qualifies students for the Auckland Champion of Champions.
Year 7 and 8 Champions qualify for the North Counties and Counties events held in March.
Tennis
Strathallan students in Year 9 to 13 play in the Saturday college sport competition. The competition is held in Term 1. Players also have the opportunity to compete at the Auckland Secondary Schools and Counties Manukau Secondary Schools competitions. *Check availability with the school.
We hold the School Tennis Championship, also during Term 1, with games being played at lunchtimes over approximately two weeks. This is open to all college students, including those in Year 7 and 8.
Touch Rugby
Year 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to play in a one day North Counties Fun Field Day in Term one, they are also able to enter a competitive North Counties competition in Term four and if successful on to Counties Zones and Auckland Champs. College teams enter the College Sport competition in term one and four and can enter Southern Zones in March.
Tough Guy and Gal
Tough Guy/Gal is a Cross Country race that includes swamp crossings, a spiders web net climb, crawl under barb wire, beautiful native bush trails, tunnels, hurdles, a climbing frame, mud mud and more mud! Two courses available 6km and 12km held in Helensville, Auckland in Term three.
